Artist Statement
'My work predominately focuses on the search for a personal narrative, an essential energy, the ‘essence’ of a chosen subject or place encapsulated in an emotional response'
Working often with a combination of techniques, a final piece may be constructed from layers of colour and texture, using experimental methods to produce work that aims to describe movement, the energy found in nature, beautiful light, contrasts of solidity against the mysterious substance of shadows, crispness or warmth of the surrounding air, reflections across a landscape and patterns of architectural decay.
A subject visited and understood, whether urban or from the natural environment are habitually used as a personal language to convey a moment in time, a specific note travelled. An exploration of contrasts, a sense of place or character, all are recorded, redrawn & memorized in sketchbooks.
Initial drawings are used as a way of understanding the subject & in collaboration with the studies, the prints and paintings are developed through their stages. Living in a world where urban life and nature are more than ever residing together in precarious balance; it is the agressive beauty of both which holds an empirical emphasis for much of work. The results are a means of exploration both of technique and subject, where each piece is seen as an opportunity to progress and investigate further, its individual course often revealed in the final completion through the exposure of its layers
The results visually highlight the exploration of the creative process, a visual record of experiences both felt and surveyed.'
